I spent a week at a company event in Las Vegas, NV. I am officially home from my work trip. As I unwound today, I did not have much time to reflect on my final impressions, but now is the time.

People love to follow

I am amazed at how easily most attendees would simply follow everything that was said. If asked to clap, most people would. If asked to shake hands with your neighbor, almost everyone did. If told to follow xyz, people inevitably did. By my estimate, at least 90% always did as told. Now keep in mind that these are for the most part intelligent people with either long careers in the insurance business or highly successful people at the beginning of their careers. You’d think that a crop of smart people may prove a bit harder to control, but no such luck.

Leaders are great at convincing you that what is good for them is good for you

This one always blows me away. The CFO presented a chart of the share price evolution over the years and managed to get people to celebrate loudly at the positive returns. Assuming I had put all my money into the share price I’d be able to buy a small house in a cheap market…
