I published a book

Refocusing my energy

It’s been a little over a year since I decided I wanted to write more. For over two months I kept up with it. Looking back at my last stories on Medium, it is abundantly clear that I was stretching myself. I either had to give up writing, or make room elsewhere.

I chose to pursue my idea of buying a business. I spent a significant amount of time in the next few months reviewing businesses in my area to invest in. I wanted to escape the corporate slog and buying a business was now my way to do it.

I went MIA on my Medium writing. For those of you who were keen readers of have become so, I apologize. I’m hoping my career was short lived enough that it impacted less than one person!

I spent the next several months finding the right business and ultimately acquiring it mid-year. I then spent the rest of the year making sure the transition ran smoothly. It did not.

It is published!

But that is a topic for a different post. Today I’m writing to say that I’ve written! Maybe I’m the only one enjoying the irony. There it is, I participated in a challenge I stumbled upon. the challenge was to write a book and publish it within 7 days. The goal was not to write the best book in the world. It was not even to write the best book I had in me. the goal was simply to get it out there and prove it is possible.

For all you Medium writers out here, I can confidently say: it is possible! Here it is:

How it happened

There is so much to share on that. Please comment and ask questions if this brief description is insufficient.

  • Step 1: pick a topic you are passionate about. The book has to be non-fiction
  • Step 2: write an outline — you can even have AI do this for you
  • Step 3: design a cover with Canva — my cover helped me be clearer about what my book should be
  • Step 4: dedicate hours to writing. — There is no shortcut, but I put a deadline of a weekend and a target of at least 5000 words on it.

Key factor: no one can tell you how long your book should be or how you should write it. It will most likely not be your best book, but if you are struggling to write anything longer than a blog post, I highly recommend you do it. It proves it’s possible. You can start defining yourself not only as a writer, but also a published book author. That in itself is so powerful.

Good luck to you all, and for those in a corporate career needing a few hints as to how to succeed and lead a better life, check out the book!
